Porechensky Ostyak Rusai and his son Bolyak set out by water to the Glyaden sanctuary in order to plead for protection for their native land. However, the journey turns into a chain of deadly dangerous trials: at every step they are met by mystical creatures, shamanic plots, brutal rites, and clashes with nomads. Passing through curses and temptations, the heroes—without meaning to—set in motion changes that will echo in the fate of the entire Porechye.
The novel captivates with vivid national folklore, meticulous reconstruction of pagan rituals, and a tense intrigue. An additional layer of story is provided by its real foundation: the image of Bolyak is inspired by the fate of the ore prospector Bolyak Rusaev—a notable yet almost forgotten figure, whose work helped develop the Urals’ riches and turn the region into the “supporting region of the realm.”
