Glafira Semenovna and Nikolay Ivanovich Ivanovs are seasoned travelers. After, not without adventures, visiting a Paris exhibition, they headed for Italy: to see the Pope and climb Mount Vesuvius, the fiery volcano (not yet knowing that on the way a casino in Monte Carlo would be waiting for them!). This time, the company was joined by a merchant dealing in fruits, Ivan Kondratyevich, who doesn’t really understand what he is doing abroad or where he is at the moment. But like any Russian, if something is decided, he will surely drink—no matter what. Travelers with adventures jump from train to train; they eat not what they want (they’re afraid they’ll be served a frog or a turtle); yawning, they look around the surroundings and constantly land in ridiculously funny situations because they don’t know the language and don’t want to understand European manners and customs.
