"Fatherland" (англ. “Fatherland” — “Homeland,” 1992) is a detective science-fiction novel set in 1964 in an alternate-history world.
Germany won the Second World War, although the remnants of the USSR with its capital in Omsk continue to resist: the front line runs through Sverdlovsk Oblast. The Reich and the USA are superpowers with nuclear weapons. Relations between them are tense, but a thaw is forming: it has been announced that President Kennedy’s visit to Germany has been agreed.
On the eve of the 75th anniversary celebration of the Führer’s rule, in a prestigious Berlin district, the body of an old man is found in a lake. As soon as Xavier Marsh, an investigator from the criminal police of the SS, learns that the deceased is a retired party functionary, the Gestapo intervenes and orders the investigation to be stopped immediately. The truth is too dangerous: it could not only derail the planned summit meeting, but also change the course of world history. However, Marsh continues unraveling the tangle at his own peril…
