The cycle tells of people who survived after the invasion of an alien race of "mizerlyaks" resembling giant beetles. Humankind failed to stand against the invincible swarm. Learning that the enemy cannot tolerate extremely low temperatures, people fled to Antarctica, where for many years they adapted to a new life and learned how to survive in harsh conditions.

The events of the cycle take place both in Antarctica and in the lands captured by the mizerlyaks.

The main character is Matvey Belyaev, known as "the collector." He penetrates the territories occupied by the aliens in search of items for his own enrichment or to maintain life on his native station. A true collector must be able to do three things: to feel the weather so as to avoid encounters with the mizerlyaks; to use meteorological equipment; and to know all types of mizerlyaks and the weakness of each of them.

Matvey will have to become a guide for a group of soldiers sent on a rescue expedition all the way to Moscow.
