The autobiographical story "A Decent Fellow" became the basis for a film, a manga, and several anime adaptations. Many believe that the image of the main character, Yōzō Ōba, reflects the life of the author himself, Osamu Dazai. He is portrayed as a suffering man who ruins his own life and finds no meaning in it. After the story was published, Dazai seems to have put an end to his existence by throwing himself into one of Tokyo’s bodies of water. The work has gained worldwide fame and is now being published in a new translation.
