It shouldn’t have happened, but it did: a baby-lord saw a dragonet doomed to die in its egg. He couldn’t stand it and helped the little one come into the world. No one had time to intervene—Impression occurred, and with it came a shock to the social foundations of Pern. The lord has to live in a hold, the winged one—in its Weyr. Jaxom turned out to be both. And together with the white Rut, and—someone else too, a third person, one who performed incredible feats and discoveries, standing alongside the first people of Pern.
