Socialists come to power in the United States, and the government sets a course toward “equal opportunities,” considering it fair to make the talented and well-off rich—at the expense of worthless and talentless people. Crackdowns on business lead to the destruction of the economy, and, to make matters worse, talented people and the best entrepreneurs begin to disappear one after another under mysterious circumstances.
The novel’s main heroes—the steel king Hank Rearden and Dagnу Taggert, vice president of a railroad company—try in vain to stand against these tragic events. Instead of universal prosperity, society plunges into apathy and chaos.
