In the 1930s in the USSR, the French author Eugène Sue’s novel “The Wandering Jew” (Le Juif errant) was reissued under the title “Agasfer,” using a translation made back in the 19th century by Yelena Ilyina.

The plot centers on the descendants of a persecuted Huguenot: for one and a half centuries, their inheritance had been kept by a Jewish banker. After scattering across different countries, the heirs receive medals instructing them to appear in Paris on February 13, 1832, in order to claim their rights to the estate. But an order of the Jesuits drives intrigue and does everything to hinder them, while on the other side stands the wandering Jew and his sister—doomed by a curse for the sake of saving the family.

Combining an adventure novel, mystical motifs, and social commentary, “The Wandering Jew” became one of the most notable literary events in France of that era, and it boosted the popularity of the feuilleton format—publications in installments with continuations. It was Sue’s second major serial novel after “The Mysteries of Paris”: first it ran in the newspaper “Le Constitutionnel” from June 1844 to August 1845, and later it was published in separate volumes. Instant success brought the publisher tangible benefit—the audience grew from 3,600 to 23,600 readers.
