The Gold-Bug

The story takes place in South Carolina. Hermit William Legrand, from a wealthy family, during a walk together with his slave Jupiter, finds a “golden” beetle. They wrap the insect in a piece of parchment that they accidentally discover nearby. Returning home, Legrand unexpectedly notices a skull drawing on the parchment that appears thanks to hidden ink, and a strange cipher—an array of numbers and symbols…
