In the midst of abandoned Swedish bogs lies the village of Mossmarken, where people have been coming for ages to leave offerings to the gods. The village holds terrible secrets, because over many years the locals disappeared in the ominous swamps of Mossmarken. They were found after several years with a pouch of coins in their pockets. Young biologist Natalie Strem, returning for research for her dissertation, comes back to a place that was once home—where she left after a terrible family tragedy. There she meets Johannes, a student at the local college.
One night, after a storm, in the bog she finds her new friend unconscious, and in his pocket— scattered golden coins. Nearby is a fresh grave. This discovery provides a frightening reason to begin investigating the past—both for the police and for Natalie. Does the bog thirst for new victims, as locals claim? Or does the terrible evil lurking in this small village have a human face?
