Milorad Pavić is an author whom critics have often called “the first writer of the 21st century.” In the collection “Entry under the Sign of the Virgin,” mysticism is interwoven with magical realism and Serbian history—and each text is wrapped as a riddle.

Five men and two women, standing beside their homes, find a curtain—and behind it, a crowd studying them. In the overgrowth of a Roman amphitheater, spirits lie in wait, craving blood. And one hero writes a letter meant for the dead.

The book contains a story that cannot be read twice.
