The American War of Independence continues. And on his very first day after arriving, he is pulled into an investigation of a murder committed in the slums of New York. But if life in an era of change costs so little, why does this death matter? Evidently, building a nation is a profitable business, and some people are not willing to miss out on the gain — whatever it may cost…
The case is complicated by the fact that the murdered man was among the recent guests of the house where Saville is staying, and the owners — the family of Wintour — seem highly suspicious to the clerk. Their loyalty to Britain cost them a fortune; their estate was plundered, yet Captain Wintour wants to find something of great value among the ruins, and at night there are the sounds of a child crying in the house — a topic neither the owners nor the servants will discuss…
