Description
“The Elephant’s Journey” is the penultimate book by José Saramago, the great Portuguese writer and Nobel Prize for Literature laureate, who passed away in 2010. In this novel, the King of Portugal, João III the Pious, presents to Archduke Maximilian—future emperor of the Holy Roman Empire—an unusual wedding gift: an elephant named Solomon. And so, together with his handler Subhro, the elephant sets off on a journey across Europe torn apart by religious wars, enduring a multitude of adventures along the way. Its route runs through Valladolid and Genoa, Verona and Venice, across impassable Alpine passes, along the picturesque river Inn—and finally to the imperial capital, Vienna, the heart of the Habsburg realm.
