Frightened by a medical diagnosis, Oswald T. Campbell flees cold, damp Chicago to the south, to the hospitable Lost Creek, where he plans to spend his last Christmas. He expects nothing good from the backwoods, but reality turns out to be nothing like what he imagined. Life in Lost Creek is measured and calm, but also very unusual and even strange. The townspeople are likewise anything but ordinary. The postman delivers mail by boat. In the only small shop, a little red bird named Jack runs everything. The women of the town secretly do good by uniting in an esoteric society called “Big Pea Sprouts.” And as for Oswald himself—he suddenly becomes the central figure in local high society. As Christmas draws near, amazing things begin to happen, changing not only Oswald’s life, but that of everyone in Lost Creek.
Fannie Flagg’s novel is a strange, captivating, warm Christmas fairy tale filled with the most ordinary magic—magic that many can do, if only they truly want to. A book for everyone who is homesick for a kind word and a beautiful story.
