The main feature of Masanobu Fukuoka’s method is that he managed his farm in cooperation with nature, without trying to conquer it or improve it. Hence the name of his method—“natural,” meaning “of nature.” Once, in an abandoned rice field, he saw healthy rice shoots breaking through a tangle of grasses and weeds. From that time on, he stopped flooding his rice field with water, stopped sowing rice in the spring, and instead scattered seeds in the autumn directly onto the surface of the soil—seeds that, in nature, are supposed to be dispersed simply by falling from ripe panicles. He learned to control the number of weeds; by making sure that such conditions favored the growth of cultivated plants, M. Fukuoka tried to interfere as little as possible in the life of plant and animal communities in his fields.
