During the age of the great Mongol campaigns, the masters of the Mongol Empire created a Colossus — a mechanical horse with three heads, capable of spitting fire. When the empire fell, the construction was hacked into pieces, and the heads were hidden in the Ural Mountains.

Many centuries later, the Kazakh minister Satybaldin begins a hunt for fragments of this ancient mechanism, transporting them out of different countries across Asia and assembling them piece by piece. Meanwhile, at a scientific symposium, Professor Sarychev is preparing to present a map that will show the way to the hidden heads. But the minister’s men disrupt the presentation: they carry out a bloody massacre, kill dozens of scholars, and kidnap the professor.

Historian and former special-operations officer Dmitry Rodinov, together with colleagues, sets off on an expedition into the Orenburg steppes. Their goal is an ancient cave where, according to legend, a pagan temple is hidden — along with the three heads of the mechanical horse.

Constantly evading the pursuit of the militants, Rodinov’s group nevertheless manages to enter the underground sanctuary. A fight breaks out, and under the blows of weapons and time, the vaults collapse. Having overcome nearly impossible odds, the Keepers succeed in seizing the sacred relics of Ugedei and, in doing so, deprive Satybaldin of the chance to turn ancient power into an instrument of authority.

A story of duty and honor, of the curses of the past, and of ruthless ambitions — and of what a person is capable of when power becomes the goal at any cost.
