«The Star Rover» is a science fiction novel by the American writer Jack London, published in 1915. In the UK, the book was released under the title «The Jacket». The work blends elements of mysticism and themes of reincarnation.
The narrative is told in the first person—Darrell Standing, a university professor, narrates. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in San Quentin for murder. The prison authorities try to break his spirit using a torture device known as the «jacket»: a canvas coat that can be tightened so that it compresses the entire body and triggers episodes of angina.
To withstand his torment, Standing finds a way to enter a special trance state. In this state, he mentally travels among the stars and experiences episodes from his past lives.
