“The Ring of Aphrodite” contains references to Blok, Mayakovsky, Shevchenko, and many other great poets—references as strange as the work itself. “The Ring of Aphrodite” is a piece that you have to read from beginning to end—or don’t read at all!
So: “… One day Aphrodite showed up at Hephaestus’s forge and sternly ordered him to forge a little ring for her. ‘For me?’ Hephaestus exclaimed, stupid. ‘For me!’ Aphrodite said (Olympians were distinguished by incredible grumpiness). ‘We’ll forge it,’ Hephaestus replied. ‘From what material?’ ‘From that material so that everyone will love me,’ answered Aphrodite—and, sniffling at the doorway, she slid down the slope like a shot horse…’
