In Tajikistan there was a legend: a wealthy merchant, Saifuddin, ordered from the great jeweler Ustot a golden belt as a gift for the king of Afghanistan. The golden belt was of extraordinary beauty — 30 golden plates were interwoven in lace-like patterns, never repeating. On a gorge route, the caravan was attacked by robbers; the merchant died, but before his death he managed to throw the belt into a deep gorge with a surging stream.
A young engineer from St. Petersburg — Nikolai Dubrovins — believed in this legend and decided to search for the golden belt. Fortune favored him: he found the treasure. But will he be able to keep it safe?..
