In this work, Nekrasov touches on the problem of a woman’s position for the first time, depicting her desire for independence and for honest independent work. About the heroine V. E. Evgenyev-Maksimova wrote: “In the eyes of society, Alexandra Ivanovna is not a fallen woman, but a disgraced one. Believing herself to be such, she prefers to die from unbearable labor rather than accept help from her benefactress, whom she feels infinitely guilty toward.”
