The Lawyer's Wife

That’s it—I can’t anymore… I break out of the bedroom and go down the stairs. I cross a small, cozy hall and reach the door of the guest room where Lisa is hiding. I open the door quietly. Yes, without knocking. I’m tired of knocking on her soul all the time.

Lisa sits in half-light on the bed, facing the window. Streetlamp light pours through the window, and she silently cries.

“Lisa…” I call her softly.

She doesn’t answer, but she doesn’t send me away either. I come to her bed. Quietly I sit down behind her and carefully touch her shoulders with my hands.

“It’s me, Lisa,” I whisper against her neck. “I love you.”
