1962, the English countryside. A harsh winter brings not only snowstorms, but also trials for two married couples whose calm lives are threatened. Dr. Erik Parry, a man who knows how to keep secrets, goes on calls while his pregnant wife rests in their warm, cozy home. In another part of the village, in a cold little house, another pregnant woman, Rita Simmons, sleeps—but memories of the past won’t let her go, even in her dreams. Her husband is already busy in the cowshed since morning.
There is affection, and perhaps even love, in the relationships of both couples. But December brings snowstorms and an unprecedentedly severe winter, and they are headed for a test not only of the weather.
