Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818–1883) is a famous Russian writer, a classic of Russian literature, whose works are invariably included in the school literature curriculum across different age groups.
We present, in audio format, a cycle of essays and short stories by the author, known as “A Sportsman’s Sketches” (“Записки охотника”). This landmark collection includes twenty-five works. The author of “A Sportsman’s Sketches,” an avid hunter, describes the everyday life and customs of the inhabitants of provincial Russia—gentry and their serfs. In the essays and stories, the nature of central Russia is lovingly portrayed; issues concerning the peasants are touched upon, and their inner world and way of thinking are explored. In a narrative suffused with lyricism, the author sometimes introduces elements of satire aimed at the serfdom-based order of his time and the declining nobility. We recommend this collection to both school students and adults. Listen to this outstanding performance by Ivan Litvinov!
