In the comedy “A Curious Accident” (“Un curieux accident,” 1760), whose plot is taken from real life, the main character—a wealthy Dutch merchant named Philibert—ridicules in a comical way the fate of the French officer his daughter is prevented from marrying. As a result, the smart daughter, Jeanneine, seizes the moment and makes her father bless the marriage that has already taken place.
