A child's world is a looking-glass world, where nothing is as it seems. A garden of forking paths in the labyrinth of outer and inner space-reality, which for some reason we are accustomed to calling life. With each new birthday the paths become ever more tangled, more branching, and ever more often some of them end in ominous dead ends โ dwellings of cruelty, violence, loneliness, and hopelessness. Adults are mistaken if they think they are always able to understand, help, shield, and protect. In the looking-glass world they are powerless, and often in need of protection themselves, and their good intentions suddenly turn into a monstrous nightmare that only one remedy can overcome...
