A not-so-wealthy English family, barely making ends meet: a perpetually gloomy husband who works at a bank, with his head full of worries about paying bills; a wife struggling to keep house under harsh austerity; and two school-age children. And then one evening, chance brings to their home a fairly well-off and orphaned nephew of the family head. Accidentally seeing stacks of banknotes in his nephew’s wallet, Mr. Mable suddenly understands how the family budget on the verge of collapse can be fixed. Knowing—according to the nephew—that no living soul knows about his arrival in England and his visit to them, he makes a decision that changes his life. And he commits murder… Murder that no one will ever find out about. It was simple— even too simple. But then… How did Mr. Mable’s life change, how did the people around him change, and how did Mable himself change under the influence of a secret known only to one person in the whole world—himself?
