The book "Volokolamsk Highway" is a cult work of military prose that describes the feat of Soviet soldiers during the defense of Moscow in the Great Patriotic War. It was translated into ten languages and vividly shows the terrible days of the defense of Moscow. The novel presents the war through the eyes of an officer who must make difficult decisions about the life and death of his subordinates—and it changes his view of the war. This book inspired Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, the latter calling one of the heroes his idol.
