The collection of stories «Spring in Fialta» by the famous Russian-American writer, one of the classics of twentieth-century literature, Vladimir Nabokov, was published in 1956, although most of the stories had been written and published separately by Nabokov-Sirin back in the 1930s. Nabokov himself regarded his stories not merely as laboratories in which techniques later used in his novels were worked out: «Many widespread species of butterflies outside the forest zone produce small, but not necessarily weak, varieties. In relation to the typical novel, the short story represents such a small alpine or arctic form. It has a different appearance, but it belongs to the same species as the novel and is linked to it by several preceding clines.» The collection presented to readers includes fourteen stories of virtuoso style that became classics of Russian twentieth-century short prose during the author’s lifetime.
