A story about a German shepherd named Ruslan, among other guard dogs employed in guarding a prisoner camp. The events take place during the “Khrushchev Thaw,” thanks to which the camp was disbanded. The service dogs that suddenly became unnecessary were ordered to be disposed of—but not every camp employee, to whom the dog had been assigned, dares to murder their charge. Some dogs, including Ruslan, were simply left to fate. From that moment on, the animals are on their own and try to adapt to the new life by hunting in the forest or looking for food in the settlement near the station located not far from the camp.
