An eleven-year-old village boy comes from the countryside to the city to continue his schooling. The boy suffers from anemia and is often tormented by hunger. A young French teacher, Lidia Mikhailovna, offers him her help, but the proud boy stubbornly refuses. The young woman resorts to a trick to help the child and plays with him for money, inviting him to her home for private French lessons.
