May 1936. A young girl arrives in a tiny mountain village in Cádiz to fulfill her calling—to become a teacher. Ulalia, whom the students call Lali, is overflowing with excitement and hope: ahead of her lies her first class and a group of children she dreams of helping pave the way to knowledge. But soon after the start of the Spanish Civil War, the principles instilled in her during the years of the Republic are declared unacceptable. Accused of “propaganda,” Lali is arrested, and the path to school for her is closed.
Thus she becomes one of the victims of the repressions that, during the dictatorship, affected nearly a third of Spain’s educators. And yet, after thirty years, an unexpected visit overturns her life. This is the story of a teacher with no students who never stopped fighting for the right to teach again. In his novel, José Antonio Lucero pays tribute to the profession and reminds us: a true teacher remains a teacher under any circumstances.
