“The Twilight Watch” is a novel by Russian science-fiction writer Sergey Lukyanenko, the third installment in a series about the fictional world of the Others. The novel was written in 2002–2003 and first published by AST in 2004. It consists of three novellas—“No One’s Time,” “No One’s Space,” and “No One’s Power”—linked by a common plot and main characters.
The action takes place in modern-day Moscow as of the time of writing, as well as on the railway in the direction of Almaty and Baikonur. In addition to the familiar human world, there is the world of the Others—who include magicians, sorcerers, werewolves, vampires, witches, witchers, and other beings derived from humans but who don’t identify themselves as such. The Others are divided into the Light and the Dark. Good no longer actively clashes with Evil; instead, it is in dynamic equilibrium with it. To maintain the balance between Light and Darkness, any benevolent magical influence must be counterbalanced by a malicious one. Special organizations created among the Others—the Watches—monitor compliance with this order. The Night Watch represents the Light’s interests, while the Day Watch represents the Dark’s. The work of the Watches is overseen by the Inquisition.
