Description
Fernando Aramburu’s novel “The Storks” was published five years after his famous “Home Land,” translated into 34 languages and bringing the author worldwide fame. To many people’s surprise, this time the writer sharply changed not only the subject, but also the style of writing. The protagonist of “The Storks,” fifty-year-old philosophy teacher Toni, apparently—without any obvious reason—decides to end his own life. He even sets an exact date for his death, giving himself a year to wrap up his affairs. At the same time he starts keeping a diary, in which every evening he describes the events of the past day and reconstructs the history of his life. The diary’s goal is to figure himself out and understand why he has so hopelessly lost the desire to remain on this earth. The diary is utterly candid: Toni pours out his deepest feelings without embarrassment, reveals the motives behind the ugliest actions, and reflects on the nature of happiness, love, friendship, and family relationships.
