Herbert Wells is considered the founder of science fiction, having anticipated many modern genres such as “dystopia,” “time travel,” and “the war of the worlds.” He worked on the novel for 13 years, rewriting and expanding it. In his work, he shows the future where advanced technologies develop—such as airplanes and space travel. The main character wakes up in the distant future, where he is called “the Sleeper” and considered a powerful man on the planet. But soon he realizes that people’s lives have changed—not always for the better—and not everyone welcomes his awakening.
