Sir Gilbert Ratland, an aristocrat from a once-wealthy family, found in his old house a map of a distant uninhabited island. It indicated the location of a treasure with jewels buried there two hundred years ago. To reach the island, he was forced to find helpers and a companion who could finance the venture.
And finally, the expedition’s goal is reached—the treasure is found. Everyone is pleased with themselves and with one another—each was needed, each played their part. The only thing left is to split the loot! But precisely this task turns out to be impossible. Passion flares up for real. The closeness of the coveted treasure changes the would-be treasure hunters’ former appearance, robs them of peace and even of the remnants of conscience, awakening their basest instincts and darkest thoughts.
