“Death in Persia” is an unfinished novel written by the Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach and published after her death. It’s an unusual narrative, sometimes surreal, mixed with descriptions of illness and opium intoxication—everything reflecting Schwarzenbach’s own personality.
In the novel, the author immerses the reader in her experiences of loneliness, hopelessness, love, and leaving Europe gripped by World War II, while also describing her journey through the beautiful expanses of Persia. In search of her place in a world that does not accept her “otherness,” Schwarzenbach constantly reflects on death, which, like the heroine of the book, follows her everywhere.
