An audio performance based on F.M. Dostoevsky’s work.
The main character is a poor civil servant, a copyist named Vasya Shumkov, who continues the themes of the “dreamer” and the “little man” in Dostoevsky’s writing. Shumkov considers himself unworthy of happiness due to his social inferiority. The character’s psyche cannot withstand the combination of two feelings at once: happiness expressed by his beloved girl’s agreement to become his wife, and guilt toward his superiors for work left undone—which he sees as ingratitude in response to the patron-superior’s kindness.
