The Overcoat

Titular adviser Akaky Akakievich loved his job very much and carried it out well and conscientiously. And yet not only the position, but also his salary were the lowest in the department. The clerk had to save on everything. One day he noticed that his old overcoat was completely worn out and had become unfit for use. He took it to a tailor, but the tailor refused to alter it, and Akaky Akakievich—cutting his expenses even more—started saving money for a new overcoat.
