The name of the brilliant English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564–1616) is known all over the world, and the influence of his work on the development of European culture in general and drama in particular is undeniable. Yet almost four centuries later, Shakespeare’s personality remains a mystery both to ordinary people and to historians.
In the new novel by young writer Victoria Balashova, an ambitious attempt is made to show not the life of a great playwright, but the life of an ordinary person—with all his passions, weaknesses, interests, and, of course, love. It was love that inspired Shakespeare to create his greatest works. After all, most of his beautiful sonnets were dedicated to two closest people—Count Southampton and his wife, Elizabeth “the Faithful.” And the immortal tragedy “Hamlet” was written after the death of Shakespeare’s only son, Hamnet, who died in childhood.
