Garrison service in newly conquered Finland was considered very hard, especially on the Åland Islands. Officers who had offended were sent to the Kamchatka regiment. Among them was ensign Pavel Bestuzhev, recently promoted from enlisted soldier to officer. The times were unclear and alarming. January 1826 was ending… At the cost of his own life, Bestuzhev saves a wounded Decembrist who intended to cross the border. Almost two centuries later, this story received an astonishing continuation.
