The novel is set in the midst of the Civil War, which ended with the surrender of the Confederates in 1865. At the center of the story is a conflict between the wealthy plantation owner James Burbank and a bandit, Texar, living in the south of Florida. As a Northerner, Burbank considers slavery evil, which Texar and other residents of the Confederate States oppose. In addition, Texar is furious with Burbank due to accusations of robbery—and although he has a perfect alibi that allows him to avoid responsibility, he passionately wants revenge. Texar turns the townspeople against Burbank and leads the mob that destroys his plantation, Camdless Bay. Burbank’s daughter Dee and Zerna, the caretaker, are kidnapped…
