Description

The novel is set in the midst of the Civil War, which ended with the surrender of the Confederates in 1865. At the center of the story is a conflict between the wealthy plantation owner James Burbank and a bandit, Texar, living in the south of Florida. As a Northerner, Burbank considers slavery evil, which Texar and other residents of the Confederate States oppose. In addition, Texar is furious with Burbank due to accusations of robbery—and although he has a perfect alibi that allows him to avoid responsibility, he passionately wants revenge.
