Description
Journalist Varya Osokina travels to the Russian North to prepare a report on the revival of a long-abandoned church on an island among the branches of the Onega. But in her as well—a desert remains after the fire: four years ago her father died, and the pain has never let her go.
In the damp fog over an icy river, the familiar world begins to fall apart at the seams. Here, pike whisper about hidden fears, and from the black water a mermaid appears and offers an escape that is hard to refuse. Varya agrees without weighing the consequences, and only too late realizes that the deal has a dark side—and that the price for oblivion may prove unbearable.
