Looking back on my whole life, I see a chain made up sometimes of logical events and sometimes of accidents—strange, fortunate and unfortunate circumstances, mistakes, stoppages, missteps, dandyism, wasted time, frivolity; yet this chain is also made of days and hours of painstaking work, of disappointments, dissatisfaction, and even despair—while at the same time it consists of a hidden faith in one’s own strength, love for one’s art, searches—sometimes blindly, by feel, and sometimes clear and purposeful—leading, finally, to inspiration, to creative joy, to an artist’s satisfaction! And so, all of this makes up my creative life in its entirety. About all this, truthfully and openly, I want to tell in my book. It seems to me that only a book written from the heart is needed—or at least has a right to exist.
