...this edition will give rise to all kinds of complaints and shouts not only against the audacious publisher, but also against the people who created such fairy tales, in which popular imagination, in vivid images, and without the slightest restraint in expressions, unleashed all the power and wealth of its humor. Leaving aside all possible complaints directed specifically at us, we must say that any outcry against the people would be not only injustice, but also an expression of complete ignorance, which, for the most part, is precisely one of the inalienable traits of noisy, pretentious “virtue.” Our “Dearest Fairy Tales” are a one-of-a-kind phenomenon, as we said, especially because we do not know another edition in which, in fairy-tale form, authentic popular speech would strike with such a living spring — sparkling with bright and witty sides of the common person.
