Yevgeny Viktorovich Zharinov is a well-known Russian writer, literary scholar, publicist, and translator. Professor at the Department of World Literature, Faculty of Philology, Moscow State Pedagogical University (MPGU). Zharinov’s new book is devoted to the Romantic era—a controversial moment in the history of human culture. The widespread fascination with mysticism and spiritualism coexisted with a rapid development of science and medicine, industry, and mass thinking. Romanticism revealed to humanity the secret of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, introduced dinosaurs, gave the world the tin can, and revealed the grim genius of Napoleon. Goya, Byron, Hoffmann, Chopin, Nietzsche—here is an incomplete list of geniuses born in the era of Romanticism. This book is about his influence on the development of world culture.
