This audiobook represents the perspective on the history of rock music of a man who has travelled a long and complex path as a performer, composer, and leader of his own ensemble, from the 1950s to the present day. The author of the book knows what he is writing about from personal experience, having played and composed music in a wide variety of styles. Beginning with traditional jazz and moving on to its avant-garde forms, Alexei Kozlov arrived in the early 1970s at the idea of creating the jazz-rock ensemble "Arsenal." Over the course of more than twenty years, the ensemble's music evolved, absorbing everything new that arose in world practice, from the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" to new wave, breakdancing, and funky fusion.
In domestic practice, beginning with the early perestroika period, books on the subject of rock music began to appear in print. But all of them were devoted to Soviet rock and pop groups. In Soviet times, only isolated publications appeared about Western rock music β not with the aim of conveying objective information, but from the standpoint of ideological criticism. An analysis of Western publications on this subject shows that they prefer to publish encyclopedias or dictionaries containing only facts β that is, names of performers, names of groups, dates, and bibliographies. Commercial publishing usually tries to avoid releasing works with an analytical approach that require the reader to assimilate a certain conceptual framework. In this work, the author offers the reader a professional perspective on the various trends in contemporary music that have a direct or indirect relationship to rock culture, presented in an accessible form. Everything that has happened to popular music over the past half-century is examined here in inseparable connection with social processes and youth movements, subjected to a kind of socio-cultural analysis. In our country, this is the first serious publication of this type, designed for specialists as well as a broader readership.
