Robin Hood

Legends about the noble outlaw Robin Hood have been known since at least the 13th century: a chronicle from 1266 notes that among the dispossessed, the robber Robert Good became famous—whom people gladly make the hero of games and performances, and whose story, sung by traveling bards, the English listen to with special interest. A whole cycle of ballads is devoted to Robin Hood and his faithful companion Little John. They tell us that they lived in the time of King Richard the Lionheart, that Robin led a band of free archers whom even wealthy knights and the sheriff of Nottingham were afraid to challenge. It was these ballads that became the basis for a prose retelling—poetic in tone and addressed to children—by Irina Tokmakova.
