This book was written by former students of the Dostoyevsky Communal School: Grigory Georgievich Belykh and Alexey Ivanovich Yeremeyev (L. Panteleev—literary pseudonym). The story is based on real events. The action takes place in one of the children’s shelters of Petrograd during the harsh, tragic times of the Civil War. The book blends both comedic and deeply dramatic elements. The lives of yesterday’s homeless children and the director of the children’s shelter—endlessly devoted to her work—are described in vivid colors and will surely interest both children and parents. In 1966, the book was adapted into a film, and the film of the same name is still very popular. And in 2013, the novella was included in the list of “100 books,” recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for independent reading by schoolchildren.
