The mirror above the sink was clouded over with a hazy veil of steam. And through it, words began to show:

I stood in the bathroom naked, holding a towel, unable to look away. The first thing that came to mind was nonsense: a prank. A stupid, cruel prank. But who would even think to joke like that?

I slowly reached for my phone on the shelf. I took the mirror down—by then the letters were already spreading, blurring at the edges. Then I ran my palm over it and erased the inscription.

I sat on the edge of the bathtub and took three deep breaths.

Whether it’s true or not—I’ll find out. But not now. Not during the party. Today I’ll just go downstairs, smile, and pay closer attention than usual. Those words were left by someone nearby. Someone from among the people I know. Someone who already knows about what I still don’t even suspect.

I straightened up, adjusted my makeup. I slipped into a black dress—doesn’t matter that today is my birthday.

A woman I recognize stared back at me from the mirror. Even. Collected. Perfect. Time to go back.

The living room was noisy. Everything was the same: the same faces, the same laughter, the same music.

Nobody noticed that my world had just split in two.
