Daniil Ivanovich Yuvachyov (1905–1942), while still in school, invented a pen name—Kharms—which he varied with striking inventiveness: sometimes even in the signature under a single manuscript: Kharms, Horms, Charms, Khaarms, Shardam, Kharms-Dandan, etc. The thing was that Kharms believed an unchanging name brings bad luck, and he took a new surname as if trying to escape it. "Yesterday Dad told me that as long as I am Kharms, I will be pursued by troubles."
